  • Description: Scientific collaboration in the commercial growth area of microelectronics has been very fruitful between india and Germany. It is therefore appropriate to have regularly a joint workshop where the achievements are reviewed and future work is planned. The second Indo-German microelectronics workshop took therefore place on two days of the 7th and the 8th December 1995 in the comfortable Government Hotel Rajhans in Suraj Kund in the State of Haryaria, about one hour away by car from the centre of Delhi. Since most of the collaborative partners in India are Institntes of CSIR, the Indian coordinator was Prof R. N. Biswas who most competently made all the detailed arrangements of the meeting. As the German coordinator I found the experience of working with him very enjoyable and stimulating. About 16 years ago I was Chief Technical Advisor for a large Micro-electronics project of UNDP for CEERl, Pilani, over a period of almost 3 years. At the end of this project I was fortunate in discovering that some of this global UNDP effort can be then also continued bilaterally between Germany and India; in Germany under the BMBF scheme of the International Bureau at the Forschungszentrurn Julich. A good number of joint microelectronics research projects resulted. I am very pleased that many valuable results have been achieved under this subject heading by the various partnerships between our twocountries. We are all grateful for the provisions made avialable by the Authorities of our two countries to enable this collaboration work. The workshop in Suraj Kund was attended by personalities from CSIR, Department of Electronics, NRDC, Universities, ITTS and industry of the Indian side, together with all the project researchers, and by the Science Counsellor of the German Embassy, Dr. S. F. von Weick and project leaders from German research centres. I am particularly pleased that Prof. Dagmar Schipanski of the Technical University of llmenau was one of us. Not long after her retnrn to Germany she was elected the chairman of the ...
