  • Description: Non Destructive Testing (NDT) or Non Destructive Inspection (NDI) covers a wide range of processes used in quality control. The generic term NDT covers several sub processes such as Dye Penetrant Inspection, Radiography, Ultrasonics and Eddy Current. The processes should be applied at the discretion of the design authority depending on the criticality of the part or component. Every component used in spaceflight should have been subjected to some level of NDT but yet space industry and space agencies in Europe currently have no controlling document. The recommendation is to create a standard which will define NDT requirements for given components and systems for spaceflight. The standard will also compliment the new ECSS standard "Processing and quality assurance requirements for welding of metallic materials for flight hardware" which is currently under preparation by ECSS WG. The intention would be to capture the best practice across the large range of international and national standards. The document will help enforce standardisation of NDT across all projects. The scope would include all flight parts and components used for space missions including Ground Support Equipment (GSE). All NDT methods will be included and the levels of necessary certification stipulated. The qualification of such processes will also be defined for non-standard NDT techniques or where complex components are concerned. The document shall focus on fracture critical components, weldments and joints but will also cover the basic requirements for fabricated and machined parts.
