  • Description:
We examine homogeneous open chemical reaction systems under constant temperature and pressure with two species, and show that, if the concentration of one species is held constant in time by coupling the system to an infinite reservoir, there is exactly one stationary point, independent of the reaction mechanism. Hence for an open system to have more than one stationary point, the reaction mechanism must involve at least three species, two of which may be held constant. This result contradicts some recent papers on the behavior of certain model reaction systems.
