Description:
In the USA, Puerto Rican (PR) children have a higher prevalence of asthma than other Latino ethnicities. The objective of the current research was to assess vitamin D biomarker status in children living in New York City (NYC: latitude 40°) that make up the NYC‐PR Asthma Biomarkers Cohort. Blood samples were collected at age 2 years (n=143; n=53 males and 54 females). Home/demographic characteristics and respiratory symptoms were assessed every 6 months from birth‐2 years. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were determined using radioimmunoassay [DiaSorin Inc]. At age 2 years, the mean vitamin D concentration was 23.6 ng/mL. 33% (n=47) of the children were vitamin‐D deficient (<20 ng/mL). Of the 143 children, only 17% (n=24 children) were vitamin D‐sufficient (>30 ng/mL) and the remaining 119 children (83%) had suboptimal vit D levels (< 30 ng/mL). Vitamin D sub‐optimal biomarker status is common in this sample of 2 year old inner city children of PR ethnicity. In future research, we will examine multiple determinants associated with vitamin D deficiency and asthma morbidity markers in this sample.
