<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Fundamental principles of chemical transport reactions (CVT) are described including the historical development. Typical transport reactions are regarded with respect to general principles and the thermodynamic background. Some practical aspects (Mond process, halide lamps, hydrothermal synthesis) are discussed.</jats:p>
