<jats:p>This article discusses the scientific probing and evaluation of filtration that has been under way since 1937. This article, however, should be regarded as only an interim report. Further progress will be made and fresh thinking will undoubtedly be performed. More and more of the established processes of water treatment will come under critical scrutiny.</jats:p>
