<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The conformation and relative configuration of various condensed heterocycles possessing a 2,3‐dihydro‐1,5‐benzothiazepine moiety and their synthetic intermediates were determined by <jats:sup>1</jats:sup>H and <jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C NMR spectroscopy. It was found that epimerization takes place during the ring closure reaction.</jats:p>
