<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>An explicit formulation for the dynamic analysis of rivers is presented. The model is based on the finite element method but works like an explicit finite difference scheme. It includes the advantages of both methods: high flexibility and low computer costs.</jats:p>
