<jats:p>A strategy of optimizing the CAL adsorption mode induced by an inert metal is adopted to synthesize a series of Ir-based catalysts. The optimal catalyst IrCd<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>exhibits better activity and COL selectivity than that of the Ir counterpart.</jats:p>
