<jats:sec><jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>203 ponds and their environs in south-east England were studied with respect to the distribution of amphibians and to a number of specific habitat features. A discriminant analysis was carried out to identify the most important habitat features for each species and to derive discriminant functions capable of separating used and unused sites into characteristic groups.</jats:p>
