Description:
Although my mother was Jewish, I apparently do not fit the cultural stereotypes of “looking Jewish.” In this personal narrative, I recount some of my experiences with the stereotyping from both Jews and Gentiles that define me as “non-Jewish” and my responses. The narrative structure of the piece keeps the reader off balance, replicating my experience as a person whose “looks” and identity do not map onto a sociological category. As such, the article speaks more generally about the life experiences and negotiation strategies of any “bi-racial/ethnic/cultural/sexual” person.
