<jats:p> Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common condition that affects women, most of whom will be managed in general practice. PMS should be distinguished from the physiological premenstrual symptoms experienced by many women, often not needing medical advice. PMS encompasses psychological, physical and behavioural symptoms that generally occur just before menses. This article aims to guide the assessment of women presenting with PMS, including a brief overview of the epidemiology, aetiology, diagnosis and management. </jats:p>
