Since the development of the Minnesota minipig in 1949 at the Hormel Institute (USA), miniature pigs have been introduced as a model in pharmacology and toxicology, because of <jats:italic>scientific, economic</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>ethical</jats:italic> reasons.</jats:p>
