A PCR assay based on the simultaneous detection of IS
<jats:italic>1245</jats:italic>
and IS
<jats:italic>1311</jats:italic>
was developed and used to determine the host range of these insertion elements. Specific PCR products were observed in
<jats:italic>Mycobacterium malmoense</jats:italic>
,
<jats:italic>Mycobacterium scrofulaceum,</jats:italic>
and
<jats:italic>Mycobacterium nonchromogenicum</jats:italic>
, indicating that IS
<jats:italic>1245</jats:italic>
and IS
<jats:italic>1311</jats:italic>
are not limited to the
<jats:italic>Mycobacterium avium</jats:italic>
complex.
