  • Description:
I would like to point out some objectionable assumptions in "Homosexuality and Adolescence,"1 by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Adolescence.
The Statement advises pediatricians that "therapy directed specifically at changing sexual orientation is contraindicated, because it can provoke guilt and anxiety while having little or no potential for achieving change in orientation." This advice ignores the vast body of literature on successful treatment for unwanted homosexuality.
There can be tragic consequences when an uninformed physician assists in prematurely identifying an adolescent as "gay," especially if the youth expresses dissatisfaction with his/her homosexual feelings.
