  • Description: <jats:p>The Raman and <jats:sup>27</jats:sup>Al NMR spectra of the title substances have been investigated with special regard to the earlier postulated [Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>7</jats:sub>]<jats:sup>-</jats:sup> ion. The Raman spectra represent a superposition of the spectrum of the [AlCl<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>]<jats:sup>-</jats:sup> ion as well as of AlCl<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> (s). Likewise the <jats:sup>27</jats:sup>Al NMR spectra indicate AlCl species with coordination number 4 and 6 of Al. It is concluded that the postulated [Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>7</jats:sub>]<jats:sup>-</jats:sup> ion with an Al–Cl–Al bridge does not exist in the compounds investigated. The literature concerning [Al<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>7</jats:sub>]<jats:sup>-</jats:sup> is critically reviewed.</jats:p>
