<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title>
<jats:p>Readily available 2-(toluene-4-sulfonylamino)ethylamine is a convenient starting material for a two-step synthesis of 1-[2-(toluene-4-sulfonamido)ethyl]thiourea (<jats:bold>2</jats:bold>). Heterocyclization of the thiourea moiety in <jats:bold>2</jats:bold> furnished a thiazole derivative <jats:bold>3</jats:bold> which was further functionalized into substituted thiazoles <jats:bold>4–6</jats:bold>. A series of 2-(thiazol-5-yl)-[1,3,4]oxadiazoles <jats:bold>8</jats:bold>, <jats:bold>10</jats:bold> and 2-(thiazol-5-yl)-[1,3,4]thiadiazoles <jats:bold>9</jats:bold>, <jats:bold>11</jats:bold> were obtained.</jats:p>
