  • Description:
This autoethnography is an example of “immersion memoir,” a writing genre in which the writer actually revisits a past place/experience and discovers something new about herself/himself. In this piece, I go to Chicago's Senn High School's 50th reunion and visit my old neighborhoods, still class-divided, but now ethnically splintered. I relive—re-experience—the “Jewish/Gentile” divide that characterized my high-school life, and come to terms with the interplay of historical, cultural, and familial features of my growing-up. Discovering the intersections of my biography with history grants me a serenity that had eluded me.
