  • Description: <jats:p> Europe, Slave Trade, and Forced Labour: Introductory Remarks </jats:p><jats:p> This article provides a general introduction to the theme of this issue and attempts to place the following papers better in context within the relevant historiography. It focuses on the slave trade and its abolition, the close connection between antislavery ideologies and measurements and the colonial expansion of Europe especially in Africa, the slow death of slavery and forced labour in colonial Africa, and finally on the current debates about the relevance of the slave trade and colonial forced labour for the history of Europe. </jats:p>
