  • Description: Typhoons are considered as the most destructive natural disaster in Vietnam. Typhoons that have the intensity scale greater than 10 or 11 (Beaufort scale) cause sever damages to houses and buildings on their paths. Typhoons associated with inundation can also create short- and long-term damages to national socio-economy and have negative impacts on the country’s economic development. The typhoon affected area can be from hundreds to thousands of kilometres depending on the landfall of the typhoon. In Vietnam, the typhoon season is normally from June to October (occasionally to November or December), and is the most intense in September and October. This paper hence provides the information on typhoons in Vietnam. The paper also introduces the technical solutions recommended for existing and new houses located in the tropical cyclonic areas. The technical solutions presented in this paper are based on the Vietnamese traditional constructions, the results of the research projects conducted by IBST and other Vietnamese institutions as well as the international construction experiences regarding to natural disasters prevention and mitigations.
