Description:
In a series of essays which he published or drafted between 1919 and 1923, Musil took stock of the European situation following the First World War and conducted a sharp critical analysis of the prefashioned notions with which his contemporaries were addressing political issues. This article traces the development of Musil's political thinking from the youthful disdain of his prewar publications, through the disillusionments associated with the war, to his realistic postwar appraisal of the complexities of modern society. It argues that Musil's political analysis goes beyond a mere critique of nationalism and historicism, providing important insights into the processual nature of democratic politics.
