• Description:
Wastewater reuse for agricultural, industrial and certain municipal purposes can provide an economical way of increasing available water resources in countries that face water shortages as a result of increasing population and intensification of industry. The possibility of direct reuse of highly treated wastewater for municipal purposes, including drinking water, has recently been considered by a number of water planners. The complex microbiological and chemical health problems that may be involved with such direct water reuse are evaluated together with the equally serious problems associated with indirect reuse that occur in most cities of the world being supplied by water from heavily contaminated rivers. Direct reuse for other than potable purposes should be preferred at this time until a more complete answer to many important health problems is available.
