Description:

An anonymous manuscript analysis in English of Lully's Proserpine (1680) dating from circa 1700 is, as a study of an actual composition from this period, unique. It gives us the opportunity to see what a musician of the time observed in an esteemed piece of music, and how his observations relate both to contemporaneous and modern theoretical notions of dissonance treatment, interval and chordal progression, voice-leading patterns, keys, motives, and musical continuity.
