Description:
In 1973, Clark & Walker showed that the GR1 doublet splits, under uniaxial stresses, in a way closely characteristic of transitions between E and A ground states and a T excited state. To clear up certain anomalies in their results, and to extend the analysis, independent experimental results are described in this paper. It is shown that the stress dependence of the energies of the GR1 lines may be understood by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian of the perturbed GR1 centre, with good agreement between theory and experiment. Under stress, the E and A ground states are strongly coupled. The new eigenstates are calculated and shown to account for the stress dependence of the intensities of the A to T transition.
