  • Description: Stenopterygius hauffianus, hitherto known only from the Upper Liassic (Toarcian) of Germany, is identified from the English Upper Liassic. The question of whether ichthyosaur taxa were geographically widespread is examined. Information from the literature, together with some new data, suggest that a wide geographical (and often geological) range was the rule rather than the exception. Restricted geographical ranges may be due simply to the localization of good fossil exposures.
