Description:
The Joint Services West East Sahara Expedition, comprising eight men and four 1-tonne Land Rovers, completed the first crossing of the Sahara from the Atlantic to the Red Sea through the Mauritanian 'Empty Quarter' between 25 January and 3 May 1975. The distance was 12 054 kilometres (7494 miles) and the time taken 100 days. A complete gravity measurement traverse was carried out, a number of other scientific projects pursued, and new refinements to methods of navigation were tried. Appendices give details of fuel consumption and planning, and of the scientific programme.
