• Description:
An indicator based on the nearest neighbor statistic computed for a data point scatter in a plane establishes a link between cartographic theory and mapping practice. This link enables the conclusions obtained as a result of theoretical cartographic investigations to be fully and quickly utilized in practice. In addition, the indicator provides the practicing cartographer with a basis for deciding whether or not to make a map from a given set of data, and for helping to assess the expected accuracy of a thematic map constructed from these data. Two examples illustrate the use of the suggested indicator.
