Description:

Air pollution in the Valley of Mexico results from the interaction of a rapidly growing urban population with a problematic geographical setting. Use of fossil fuels in an elevated, tropical, mountain-rimmed basin generates pollution levels that exceed recommended standards. Control strategies include driving bans, expansion of public transportation, use of alternative fuels, factory closures, and industrial relocations. These strategies generally do not consider geographical variables.
