<p>The author analizes the various cases of epiphytism in algae from continental water and records the taxa found, amongst which are 2 genera and 19 spp. new to Argentina. The methodology employed is also described and a classification of epiphytic algae is proposed by arranging them in three categories. This is the first of a series of three papers, the nex two dealing with spp. of epiphytic Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta.</p>
