Description:

In the worldview of Giordano Bruno, nature—and consequently man—is constantly in a state of transformation (cf. Heraclitus). Only through knowledge and internalization of the mechanisms relating to this uninterrupted metamorphosis of everything into everything else can the magician-philosopher gain the ability to successfully intervene into natural processes and to rearrange and "manipulate" them according to his will. Music plays an important role in this philosophical system; it is conceived both as a "physical" phenomenon and a symbolic concept. This essay is the first attempt to gauge the role played by music and, more generally, by "sound" as a medium and vehicle for the illustration and "practical" application of the nolana filosofia.
