Description:
The structure and germination of the pollinium of A sclepias curassavica were studied. At the convex margin of the cuticle inclosing the pollinium a system of tiny notches, comparable to the germ pore of a single pollen grain, was detected. By germinating cut pollinia, it was shown that the pollinium is characterized by an innate organization, directing the pollen tubes toward the "germ pore" even when the cuticle is removed from the opposite side. The presence of the "germ pore" and the inner organization account for the asymmetrical germination.
