Description:

Over the past decade, there has been a strong emphasis on the development of physicochemical processes for wastewater treatment. The authors' study shows that the physicochemical process, which makes use of a batch electrolytic treatment, is able to replace the conventional biological treatment with an equal or better quality effluent. Operation and control of the batch process are very simple and require no special training. No chemical supply is necessary, and, consequently, the sludge generated is quantitatively much less. The process is therefore extremely attractive for small treatment plants in remote areas in which seawater is available. The fact that low temperature has little or no effect on the treatment efficiency also makes the process attractive in cold areas.
