Description:

The colonies of Electra crustulenta (Pallas) occur as a rule on shadowed substrates. The major factor deciding the distribution is light, which favours the growth on illuminated substrates of small algae excluding the settling of the larvae of the bryozoan. The larvae are indifferent to light but may be negatively geotactic.
