Description:
I examined 3 variations of the Chi-square test to test the assumption that survival rates of individuals within a group are independent when using the Mayfield method. An example of each test is given using data on juvenile Canada geese (Branta canadensis moffitti) presented by Eberhardt et al. (1989). A test that uses a randomly selected subsample of groups to calculate expected values is more appropriate than a test that uses the brood-specific survival rate or one that uses the survival rate estimated from the entire sample.
