The paper aims to critically resort to the materialist-geographical concept of the «spatial fix » for deepening understanding of the functioning of ancient Mediterranean polytheism as urban religion. After expounding its key notion, it focuses on a few selected samples of the early Christian critique of the polytheist production of a religious built environment in order to foreground and reassess the spatialized character of their arguments. Lastly, it touches on the major changes which occurred in this polemical discourse at the time of the increasing materialization of Christian religious space.
Cet article propose d’employer de manière critique le concept matérialiste-géographique de «spatial fix » dans le but d’approfondir notre compréhension des religions polythéistes de la Méditerranée antique en tant que religions urbaines. Après une discussion sur la pertinence de ce concept, nous proposons de considérer une série d’exemples à partir des critiques formulées par les premiers chrétiens à l’encontre de la production polythéiste d’un environnement religieux bâti, afin de mettre en évidence et réévaluer le caractère spatialisé de leurs arguments. Enfin, nous abordons les changements majeurs intervenus dans ce discours polémique avec la matérialisation croissante de l’espace religieux chrétien.
