  • Description: Polyptychus lagnelae nom. nov. for Avinoffia hollandi (Clark, 1917). The genus Polyptychus Hübner, 1819. Concept of genus (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae). Avinoffia hollandi (Clark, 1917) and Lycosphingia hamata Dewitz, [ 1879], are revealed by the study of the genitalia to belong to Polyptychus. These two monospecific genera are considered as new synonyms for Polyptychus Hübner, 1819. Polyptychus hollandi being preoccupied, a replacement name is proposed, P. lagnelae nom. nov. Polyptychopsis Carcasson, 1968, and Acanthosphinx Aurivillius, 1891, are also synonymised with Polyptychus. Historical and morphological considerations on genus Polyptychus are given, and the concept of genus is discussed.

    Avinoffia hollandi (Clark, 1917) et Lycosphingia hamata Dewitz, [ 1879], se révèlent, par l’étude des génitalias, être des Polyptychus. Ces deux genres monospécifiques sont mis en synonymie de Polyptychus Hübner, 1819. Polyptychus hollandi étant préoccupé, un nom de remplacement est proposé, P. lagnelae nom. nov. Polyptychopsis Carcasson, 1968, et Acanthosphinx Aurivillius, 1891, sont également mis en synonymie avec Polyptychus. Des considérations historiques et morphologiques sur le genre Polyptychus sont apportées, et le concept de genre est discuté.
