Progressively the Chinese learnt that those faraway countries also represented higher powers, firstly from a financial and military point of view and then economically and politically. The approach of the Chinese will be intimately linked to the circumstances which will force them to open up to foreign countries. It is then from a humiliated sino-centrism and a painful search of their own identity that they will begin to build the differences which separate the continents. Today, the mysterious, faraway world of the old "barbarians" is seen with more relevance. In fact, the intercultural reflection centred upon the attitudes of mind and values permits relativism and reciprocal exchanges.
