A certain scarcity of honorary inscriptions is a startling feature of the Hellenistic and Roman Near East. However, the surviving examples— mostly the epigraphy of Palmyra much richer compared to neighboring regions— show that this region conformed to the habits of the Hellenistic world of the same period and followed the same standards (e. g. word order) despite the occasional use of Aramaic. However, among other things, the study of the concept of friendship, commonplace in classical epigraphy, shows that at Palmyra as at Hatra, other ways could be chosen to mark the hierarchies.

Palmyre dont l’épigraphie de ce point de vue plus riche que dans les régions voisines suit ces mêmes normes des mots par exemple) malgré l’usage de l’araméen. Toutefois, l’étude du concept banal dans l’épigraphie classique, montre que comme à Hatra, d’autres voies choisies pour marquer les hiérarchies.
