Translating Wallace Stevens : of an Abstract Order Declaring itself as “ already translated ”, Wallace Stevens’s poetic world represents a particular challenge to the translator. Considering in this article the questions raised by the translation of two specific poems (A Dish of Peaches in Russia and The Plain Sense of Things), among others, I try to pinpoint the modalities of such a challenge, and suggest a few solutions. Thus will extreme simplicity have to be conveyed through the reopening of the transparency of Stevens s language, and the French translator will have to find out the analogical signs that may express the alterity of Stevens’s French idiom. The ultimate goal being hopefully to recreate the effect of a truly abstract order.
Wallace Stevens : l’ordre abstrait de la traduction Se présentant comme un monde “déjà traduit”, l’univers poétique de Wallace Stevens constitue un défi particulier pour le traducteur. Cet article se propose, à travers, entre autres, deux exemples spécifiques (A Dish of Peaches in Russia et The Plain Sense of Things), d’en repérer les modalités, et de proposer quelques solutions. Il s’agit de traduire la simplicité en recreusant la transparence de l’idiome stevensien. Le traducteur français doit en outre trouver les signes analogiques pour transposer l’altérité des emprunts français. Enfin il faudrait parvenir à recréer un effet d’ordre abstrait, à traduire le chiffre de l’abstraction stevensienne.
