Hay algo indecente en el “ acto etnológico” : la asimetría de los papeles y estatutos, la violencia de la situación de encuesta, la distancia que separa las finalidades del encuestador de las expectativas del encuestado, el voyeurismo y el paternalismo ocultados a veces por la expresión maestra : “ enfoque empático”. El investigador sabe que de todas formas traicionara a su informador. Pero esta inclinación hacia la traición es sin embargo a geometría variable. Particularmente pronunciado por los antropólogos “ objetivistas”, tiende a desaparecer (¿ pero a que precio ?) en los adeptos de la etnometodología y de la antropología interpretativa.
The “ ethnological act” has a certain inherent crudeness about it : there is the imbalance of roles and statuses, the intrusiveness of the analytical setting, the gap between the investigator's aims and the interviewees' expectations, as well as the voyeurism and paternalism that, at times, are hidden behind the one-size-fits-all formula of the “ empathetic approach”. Researchers are well aware that, in one way or another, they will betray their informants. But the extent of this natural propensity for betrayal varies according to discipline. It is still very much in evidence for “ objectivist” anthropologists, whereas it appears to be dying out in the field of ethnomethodology and interpretative anthropology— a decline of still unknown consequences.
Il y a quelque chose d'indécent dans l' «acte ethnologique» : l'asymétrie des rôles et des statuts, la violence de la situation d'enquête, la distance qui sépare les visées de l'enquêteur des attentes de l'enquêté, le voyeurisme et le paternalisme qui se cachent, parfois, derrière la formule passe-partout «approche empathique » . Le chercheur sait que, d'une manière ou d'une autre, il trahira son informateur. Mais ce penchant pour la trahison est néanmoins à géométrie variable. Très prononcé chez les anthropologues «objectivistes » , il tend à disparaître (mais à quel prix ?) chez les adeptes de l'ethnométhodologie et de l'anthropologie interprétative.
