Theocracy and client kings : Antiochos I of Commagene and Herod the Great. The goal of this paper is to draw a parallel between the propagandas of two client kings who lived nearly at the same time in the Roman Near-East : Antiochos I Theos, king of Commagene (69-36 BC) and Herod the Great (40-4 BC). Both of them were ethnic kings, both used an intense theocratic propaganda based on huge building programs. Despite the ideological opposition between Jewish monotheism and syncretic polytheism, we can point out many similarities between Herodian and Commagenian policies.
Le but de cet article est de mettre en parallèle les propagandes de deux rois clients qui vécurent à peu près à la même époque dans le Proche-Orient romain : Antiochos Ier Théos, roi de Commagène (69-36 av. n. è.) et Hérode le Grand (40-4 av. n. è.). Tous deux furent des souverains «indigènes». Tous deux développèrent une intense propagande théocratique basée sur des programmes architecturaux de grande ampleur. Malgré l’opposition idéologique entre le monothéisme juif et le polythéisme syncrétique d’Antiochos, il est possible de mettre en évidence de nombreux points communs entre les politiques des deux souverains.
