The vernal pools, which existing in all global areas with a Mediterranean-type climate, constitute a very special biotope with a rich and distinct flora where Pteridophytae and especially Isoetes play an important role. Many of them are actually in very endangered situation, and half of the component species are rare, vulnerable or threatened, as a result of intensification or modification of human activities. Although they are well developed in the western part of Mediterranean, the vernal pools in the eastern part are scattered with a less diversified flora.
Les mares transitoires, qui se retrouvent dans toutes les régions du monde à climat méditerranéen, représentent un milieu très spécial, à flore remarquable, s'organisant autour de divers cryptogames vasculaires, Isoetes en particulier, et qui à l'heure actuelle, sont en grand danger de disparition. Plus de la moitié des espèces présentes sont rares, vulnérables ou en voie d'extinction à la suite de l'intensification ou de la transformation des actions anthropiques. Surtout bien représentées en Méditerranée occidentale, elles sont éparses, rares et floristiquement moins riches dans l'est de la Méditerranée.
