The Circuits of Expense in Lysias’ Against Diogeiton. In this paper, we analyze Lysias’ Against Diogeiton by focusing on the representations of money and its spending at the end of the 5th century BC, at the crossroads of old conceptions of family solidarity and new individualistic, consumerist behavior. Lysias’ shaping of plausible narration of facts teaches us much about what was acceptable or not in matter of legacy and orphan’s supervision. We see at the same time how a woman, as the daughter of a dishonest guardian and the mother of the young victims, gains the right of talking in her own name, even if it is to defend traditional values.
Dans cet article, nous analysons le Contre Diogiton de Lysias, en nous concentrant sur les représentations de l’argent et de sa dépense à la fin du Ve siècle. av. J.-C., au carrefour des anciennes conceptions de la solidarité familiale et d’un nouveau comportement plus individualiste et consumériste. La mise en forme d’une narration des faits qui soit plausible nous en apprend beaucoup sur ce qui était acceptable ou non en matière d’héritage et de tutelle des orphelins. Nous voyons par la même occasion comment une femme, fille du tuteur indélicat et mère des jeunes victimes, gagne le droit de parler en son propre nom, même si c’est pour la défense de la Tradition.
