Depuis vingt-cinq ans, on constate un renouveau des transports collectifs dans les grandes agglomérations de province en France. Dotés de structures juridiques mieux adaptées aux périmètres urbains à desservir et bénéficiant de ressources financières nouvelles, les réseaux ont été réorganisés. Dans certaines villes, cette réorganisation s'est faite autour de lignes nouvelles desservies par des métros, des V.A.L. ou des tramways. L'article analyse la diversité des choix; il s'interroge sur leurs rapports avec la configuration des espaces urbanisés et sur le rôle des acteurs locaux.
Over the past 25 years there has been a renewal in public transport in the great urban centres of provincial France. The networks have been reshuffled and are better suited to urban areas thanks to new financial resources and better legal provisions. In some towns the networks were rebuilt along new lines served by underground railway, tramcars or light automatic vehicles (V.A.L.). The article analyzes the wide range of possible choices, examines the choices in the light of the geography of urban aeras and the role played by local authorities and local decision makers.
