The rainfall variability in time and space is very-high in the sahelian zone , it can occur in the whole West Africa. Dry or wet spells are recurrent phenomena. The drought of 1968 -1982, culminating in 1972 -1973 and once more in 1982 , exceeds all the previous drought episods in magnitude and spatial involvement. In order to understand climatic change and rainfall variability, the data required concern not merely the state of the atmosphere but the state of the whole climatic system consisting of atmosphere, ocean and land surface
Dans le Sahel Ouest-africain la variabilité spatiale et temporelle des précipitations est très importante. Les périodes déficitaires ou excédentaires sont récurrentes et la sécheresse qui a débuté en 1968 est, par son intensité et son extension, la plus remarquable du siècle. Les variations des paramètres climatiques et les changements de climat mettent en cause non seulement la circulation générale de l'atmosphère mais aussi l'ensemble du système climatique, c'est-à-dire, les interrelations atmosphère -océan -continent.
