Among the numerous hypotheses about the origins of the god Sarapis, the story of the negotiations that led its statue to leave the banks of the Black Sea for those of the Mediterranean is well known. The use that the civic authorities of Sinope made of it is perhaps less so. A study of the Sinopean coinage issued between the end of the 1st and the end of the 3rd century CE shows how the magistrates of the Paphlagonian city mobilized for their own profit a text of imperial legitimization to make it a new and major element of their civic identity by integrating a hitherto entirely foreign deity in the local pantheon.
Dans le panel des hypothèses avancées dès l’ Antiquité sur l’ origo du dieu Sarapis, le récit relatif aux tractations qui amenèrent sa statue à quitter les rives du Pont-Euxin pour celles de la Méditerranée est bien connu. L’ utilisation que les autorités civiques de Sinope firent de cette histoire dès le principat de Vespasien l’ est peut-être moins. L’ étude du monnayage de la cité émis entre la fin du ier et la fin du iiie siècle de notre ère montre combien et comment les magistrats de la cité paphlagonienne surent mobiliser à leur profit un texte de légitimation impériale pour en faire un élément central et neuf de leur identité civique, en intégrant dans le panthéon local une divinité qui leur était jusqu’ alors totalement étrangère.
