Description:
The first description of Crepis sancta for the French Flora has been made at the end of the 18 th century by Antoine Gouan, who found a specimen at the foot of the Magne Tower in Nîmes. From the botanical literature and herbarium vouchers, I tried to find an earlier description of the species in the south of France, and more generally in the western part of the Mediterranean Basin (Spain and Italy). This investigation did not support the presence of the species before Gouan described it, but it allowed to reconstitute the expansion of the species from the south to the north of France.
La première description de Crepis sancta dans les flores françaises a eu lieu à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, après la découverte d’un spécimen au pied de la Tour Magne à Nîmes par le botaniste montpelliérain Antoine Gouan. A partir de la littérature antérieure à Gouan et de quelques échantillons d’herbier, j’ai essayé de rechercher une présence plus ancienne de ce taxon dans la flore de France, et dans l’ouest du bassin méditerranéen en général (Espagne et Italie). Cette étude bibliographique n’apporte pas d’arguments pour une présence ancienne, mais a permis de reconstituer l’expansion de l’espèce depuis le sud de la France vers le nord, et de tracer un petit historique du taxon dans les flores françaises.
