A "gave" is a mountain torrent in the Pyrenees. The water supply of the city of Pau is depending almost entirely on a karstic spring called " Oeil du Neez" (the Neez Eye, which means spring of the Neez). L'Oeil du Neez is the main resurgence -among several others -of water sinks in the gave bed across the urgo-nian limestone ridge of Arudy. Development of this karstic system through the complex structural setting of a frontal thrust has been favoured by the geomorphic evolution of the Arudy basin, dammed to the north by a morai-nic loop, but also by the presence of highly suitable hydrodynamic and tectonic conditions (water head and fractures network). Water quality of the Oeil du Neez is closely depending on Gave water quality. However, the catchment area proper, of this resurgence, exerts its own chemical influence.
La ville de Pau est alimentée en eau potable à partir d'une source karstique, l'Oeil du Neez. Il s'agit de la résurgence principale parmi d'autres de pertes partielles que subit le Gave d'Ossau dans sa traversée du chaînon calcaire urgonien d'Arudy. La mise en place de ce système karstique à travers une zone d'écaillés tectoniques répond à l'évolution géomorphologique du bassin d'Arudy, barré au nord par un arc morainique, mais aussi à l'existence de conditions particulièrement favorables à l'établissement d'un fort potentiel de karstification. La qualité de l'eau de l'Oeil du Neez dépend étroitement de celle des eaux du Gave. Mais le bassin-versant stricto sensu du système du Neez apporte sa note au chimisme de la résurgence.
