Le journal télévisé est étudié dans sa structure constante, comme institution au sens de M. Foucault, donc indépendamment des 'faits' rapportés. Il est organisé autour de la figure à double face du présentateur : le présentateur est d'une part celui qui me regarde, et d'autre part celui qui enregistre dans une pure objectivité les événements du monde pour me les rapporter. Il profère ce qu'on peut nommer des mots d'ordre : ce qu'il faut savoir des événements du monde. Tout ce qui est énoncé dépend de cette structure fondamentale, les images ne témoignent que pour ces mots d'ordre : le monde dont parle le JT lui est intérieur, il est un pseudo-visible. Il fournit au téléspectateur un monde total et objectif, en mimant une démocratisation absolue de l'information, fondée sur une définition statistique de la démocratie.

Newscasting is examined here in terms of its constant structure, as an institution in Foucault 's sense, in other words independently from the reported "facts". It centers around the newscaster's double face : he is at the same time the one who is looking at me and the one who records world events in a totally objective way in order to report them to me. He produces what can be called directions: what one needs to know about world events. Every utterance is conditionned by this basic structure, the images only serve as evidence for these directions : the world which is presented in a newscast is internal to it, it is pseudo-visible. It provides TV viewers with a global and objective world, giving an appearance of total news democratization grounded in a statistical définition of democracy.
