À la fin du Moyen Âge, alors que saint Joseph commence à être mis en valeur par les théologiens et qu'apparaissent les premiers signes d'une dévotion à son égard, l'iconographie le représente parfois dans une position peu favorable qui a souvent été interprétée comme une façon de le ridiculiser. L'étude d'un corpus iconographique confronté aux textes montre que ce phénomène reste minoritaire, et qu'il contribue d'une cer taine façon à valoriser le personnage, avant même le développement de son culte.

The Ambiguous Image of Saint Joseph in the Late Middle Ages - In the late Middle Ages, when theologians were starting to valorize the image of Saint Joseph and the first signs of devotion to the saint appeared, iconography sometimes represented him in an unfavorable light, often interpreted as derisive. The study of a corpus of iconographic documents, when compared with texts, shows however that this phenomenon was a minor one, and that in a way it has contributed to the valorization of the saint, even before the development of his cult.
